Team History
The Mennos started play in 1974, managed and coached by Art and Howie Burkholder.
They were part of a church league mainly centered in the west end of Toronto. Most of the original ball team
attended local Mennonite churches in the Markham area, hence the name, “Markham Mennos.”
For years Mennos’ home diamond was the one on Elgin Mills at Victoria Square. A notable item is that back
around 1980 Rob Scheller pitched for one of the teams in the league.
Howie Burkholder and Mike Boadway threw the ball for Mennos
In the mid 1980’s Mennos made the decision to move to the North
Durham Fastball League and play as a regular intermediate team.
During that era Mennos travelled to towns such as Udora,Uxbridge
and Zephyr. Paul Boynton, Terry Reesor and Jeff Steiner came on
board to give Mennos a solid pitching staff. Mennos won the league
championship in both 1988 and 1990.
In one of those years the teamalso went OASA, defeating Sunderland in the first series,
only to lose to a heavy-hitting club from Udney in the next round.
In the early 1990’s Mennos went into hibernation for a time. Several
of the key players felt the dual tug of career and family, and so the
team chose to close up shop.
Mennos reinvented itself later in the same decade and entered the OCDFL. As many of the players on this
modern team were residents of the Stouffville area the team decided to make historic Memorial Park in Stouffville
its home park.
Howie, Jeff and Mike had retired by this time, and Byron Baranieski joined Paul and Terry as Mennos’ pitche
Mennos won the league championship in 2002 in a last-inning nail biter over Claremont.
A pinnacle of sorts was reached when Mennos won the Ontario Eliminations in Owen Sound in 2004. Scott Evans had joined the
team to give Mennos a formidable pitching rotation. In the final “if necessary” game Baranieski struck out the last batter
with the bases loaded in the 7th inning to give Mennos the title over a tough team from St. Marys.
Mennos then advanced to the Eastern Canadians in Summerside, P.E.I. where Evans threw a no-hitter in the first game
against Halifax before Mennos were eventually defeated by Charlottetown.
