The Markham Majors participated in the Desboro Fastball tournament on Aug. 5, 6 & 7 and ended up “in the money”.
The team played very well and qualified for the “C” division final game. Markham played the Bucktown Bees in their 1st. game and won by a score of 6-1 (mercy). The winning pitcher was Denis Smith. Mike Samways led a balanced hitting attack. Mike Samways and Brent Gram played well defensively.
The 2nd. game was played against the Kitchener Smoke and the Majors lost 4-1. Cam Western pitched well in a losing effort. John Loveys was 3 -3 at the plate. Blair Hogg, Pete Dzilums and Faisal Hassan played well defensively. The 3rd. game was played against the Breslau Majors and Markham won this game 1-0 in the 8th inning playing the international tie-breaking rule. Mike Samways was the runner on 2nd. base, move to 3rd on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gerry Skipwith. Cam Western had 2 hits for Markham and Blair Hogg threw out a runner at home from left field in the 3rd. inning. Dennis Smith was the winning pitcher.
Markham played the Shakespeare Colts in the “C” Division final and lost 3-1 in a very close game. Denis Smith was the losing pitcher pitching well in a losing cause. Pete Dzilums was 2-3 at the plate. Darren Seymour, Gerry Skipwith and John Loveys played well defensively.
