Oshawa Ravens 2007 Champions
|
League Finalist Lake Simcoe Lightning
|
The Oshawa Ravens relied on another strong pitching performance from Paul Koert to capture the Oshawa City and District Fastball League (OCDFL)Championship for the second year in a row. Oshawa wins the best of 5 final series 3 games to 1 against the Lake Simcoe Lightning.
Oshawa won the opening game in the series by a 1-0 score with the winning run coming in the bottom of the 8th inning. Koert and Garrity were outstanding as each pitcher only gave up 2 hits while striking out 12 and 14 batters respectively.
The second game saw up and coming pitchers Andy Skelton and Marty Humphries face-off with Oshawa winning by a 4-3 score in regulation time. After giving up 4 runs in the first inning, Skelton settled down and kept the Ravens off the score sheet the rest of the way. Lake Simcoe battled back against Humphries who eventually yielded to Koert who was credited with the save.
Game 3 back in Oshawa was dominated by the hitting of the Lake Simcoe Lightning as they chased Koert from the game after giving up an uncharacteristic 5 runs in 3 innings. Garrity was outstanding again surrendering only 4 hits and striking out 11. Lake Simcoe eventually won the game 10-0 after the 5 inning mercy rule was applied.
In the 4th game, errors and miscues proved costly as the Lightning gave up 3 unearned runs behind another stellar performance by Greg Garrity. In the top of the 4th inning, Marty Humphries walked, stole second base and advanced to third on an infield out. Humphries scored what proved to be the winning run on a passed ball. Oshawa scored two more runs in the 6th inning after Jamie Baker walked and advanced on a single by Marty Humphries. Both Baker and Humphries eventually scored following a failed pick off attempt at second base and an infield error. The final score was 3-0. Koert was outstanding in pitching the win recording 13 strikeouts and allowing only 2 hits. Garrity allowed 3 hits and 4 walks while also striking out 13.
Both teams are to be congratulated for surviving the highly competitive preliminary playoff rounds and making it to the championship series. The OCDFL Executive congratulates the Oshawa Ravens for their repeat win and wishes to thank all of the teams for their participation this year and for providing some the great fastball action that we have come to expect and enjoy.

Annual Awards Presentation
Dieppe Park
Wednesday, September 28, 20
“Prior to the start of this evening’s game, the League Executive has requested a few moments of your time to make a special award presentation and to recognize individual player performance during the regular season. Please direct your attention to the pitcher’s mound where I will ask members of the League Executive to take their place.”
“As I call their names, would the Executive member please step forward and be recognized:
Jim Spiers, President;
Ken Leonard, Past President;
Sylvia Ryan, Secretary/Treasurer;
John Sharpe, First Vice-President;
Mal Swift, Second Vice-President and
Scott Goff, Third Vice-President
Thank-you.”
“As the individual award winners are announced I would ask that each recipient please come forward to receive
their award.”
“The first award this evening is presented to the Top Batter for 2005. This young man led the league for
most of the season and finished the year with an impressive .533 batting average. Please recognize Nick Dambrosio
from the Stouffville Jones Pools Junior Team as the Top Batter for 2005.”
“The next award is for the Top Pitcher during the regular season. He finished the season with 10 wins,
an ERA of 0.35 and compiled a total of 165 strikeouts. For the second year in a row, the Top Pitcher award
is presented to Todd Martin from Aurora Shoeless Joe’s.”
“The final player award is presented for the League Most Valuable Player. The Executive could not overlook
this gentleman’s accomplishments with a batting average of .524, 7 home runs, 35 Runs Batted In and a slugging
percent of 1.127, the award for the MVP for 2005 is presented to Rino Dambrosio from Aurora Shoeless Joe’s.”
“Periodically, the Oshawa City and District Fastball League presents a special award to recognize outstanding
contributions to softball in Oshawa. The award was developed by Buddy Yahn and his father in honour of his
mother Iris Yahn. The award is presented by a member of the Yahn family and this year the League has asked
Iris Yahn’s daughter-in-law Mrs. Helen Yahn, to make the presentation. Would Mrs. Yahn please come forward?”
“This year’s recipient started his softball career at Sunnyside Park in Oshawa where he soon developed into an
accomplished hitter and pitcher. During his playing years he was on teams who won All-Ontario championships from
Minor to Intermediate “A” Men. In the mid 70’s he began his coaching career as a player/coach for Foley’s Sr. B team.
In 1984, he moved to Casey’s and the following year he joined the Oshawa Blues and took them into the Ontario
Fastball League, the first Fastpitch Travel League in the province. For 9 of the next 10 years he could be found
behind the bench of Oshawa Double B Sports Club Junior Men’s teams. He coached his Double B teams to an All-Ontario
Championship; was runner up twice and he was also able to take his team to participate in the Canadian Junior
Championships. During this time he passed on his passion for the game to several of his players.
Many players influenced by this man have gone on to our Canadian and ISC Championship teams and remain
involved in the sport at the highest level and in this league to this day.”
“The Oshawa City and District Fastball League is pleased to present the 2005 Iris Yahn Memorial Award for
Outstanding Contribution to Softball to Mr. “Buddy” Yahn. Congratulations Buddy!”
“We are sure that having your name added as a recipient of your Family’s trophy must be especially gratifying to you.
Your son Phil, who continues to play in this league, wanted to be here tonight with his mother to make this
presentation to you. Unfortunately, work commitments would not allow it.”
“Congratulations to all the award winners! Thank-you for your time and attention.”
